#7 cross-country train across the USA
I love trains.
I genuinely think trains are the best way to travel, because you get a sense of place that you don’t get from flying (even though I also love flying) while also being able to unwind (unlike with driving). One of my big disappointments with living in the US was always the limited train network, especially intercity trains, but Amtrak is the exception.
Admittedly it is not the most cost-effective, efficient, or reliable way of getting between places in the US - in fact, it might be one of the least across those 3 factors. My train was 2 days (days!!) late arriving into Chicago and cost a couple hundred dollars. But it does give you an experience that offers a totally unique way of seeing the US, seeing firsthand the vastness of the country and the changing landscapes. In any case, the delay just meant I got more time on the train, so maybe more value for money?
My route started in Seattle in late fall where the leaves were still in full color, wound through the Rockies and Glacier National Park in the snow, and ended in Chicago 5 days later where I went home to Wisconsin.
This is the Empire Builder route and I actually think it is better than the more famous California Zephyr, which cost more than twice as much.
It was the perfect contemplative time to spend alone, and I’d highly recommend it.
